Part C: Translation (2025 英二)

Part 1: Full Text (Click to Translate)

You know the moment the conversation shows, then theres pause. Its awkward, and so awkward that some people will panic and say anything. Do we all find such silences so stressful?
Researchers analysed the frequency and impact of gaps greater than seconds during conversations, including an overview of previous studies which indicate that the fear of awkward silences can be so extreme that people avoid talking to strangers, even though doing so is likely to be an enjoyable experience.
During conversations with shot gaps, people feel more connected to their conversation partners. But such feelings of connection markedly dip when entering long gap. Long gaps between strangers are likely to be followed by change in topic.
But the opposite seems to be true for conversations between friends. Long gaps there saw increased connection. Between friends, longer gaps seem to provide natural moments for reflection and expression.

Part 3: Syntax Analysis (重点句型剖析)

02 句型拆解:so... that...
It’s awkward, and so awkward that...,这是典型的 so + adj. 在 that 引导的结果状语从句中,主干是 some people will panic and say anything,其中 panic 和 say 为并列谓语。

Researchers analysed the frequency and impact...
2. 逗号后 including an overview of previous studies 是介词短语作补充说明;
3. 紧接着 which indicate that... 是由 which 引导的定语从句,修饰 studies;
4. 在 indicate 之后,是一个由 that 引导的宾语从句 that the fear of awkward silences can be so extreme that people avoid talking to strangers。在这个宾语从句内部,又嵌套了一个 so... that... 结构;
5. 句末的 even though doing so is likely to be an enjoyable experience 是由 even though 引导的让步状语从句,其中 doing so 作主语,谓语为 is likely to be

Long gaps... are likely to be followed by a change in topic。其中使用了 be likely to do(极有可能做某事)和被动语态 be followed by(被...

Long gaps there saw increased connection。
