Part C: Translation (2021 英二)

Part 1: Full Text (Click to Translate)

We tend to think that friends and family members are our biggest sources of connection, laughter, and warmth. While that may well be true, researchers have also recently found that interacting with strangers actually brings boost in mood and feelings of belonging that we didnt expect.
In one series of studies, researchers instructed Chicago-area commuters using public transportation to strike up conversation with someone near them. On average, participants who followed this instruction felt better than those who had been told to stand or sit in silence.
The researchers also argued that when we shy away from casual interactions with strangers, it is often due to misplaced anxiety that they might not want to talk to us. Much of the time, however, this belief is false. As it turns out, many people are actually perfectly willing to talk and may even be flattered to receive your attention.

Part 2: Sentence Translation (Click to Expand)

01We tend to think that friends and family members are our biggest sources of connection, laughter, and warmth.
02While that may well be true, researchers have also recently found that interacting with strangers actually brings a boost in mood and feelings of belonging that we didn't expect.
03In one series of studies, researchers instructed Chicago-area commuters using public transportation to strike up a conversation with someone near them.
04On average, participants who followed this instruction felt better than those who had been told to stand or sit in silence.
05The researchers also argued that when we shy away from casual interactions with strangers, it is often due to a misplaced anxiety that they might not want to talk to us.
06Much of the time, however, this belief is false.
07As it turns out, many people are actually perfectly willing to talk - and may even be flattered to receive your attention.

Part 3: Syntax Analysis (重点句型剖析)

While that may well be truewhile 宾语从句的末尾 that we didn't expect 是一个定语从句,修饰前面的 a boost 和 feelings。

主干为 researchers instructed Chicago-area commuters... to strike up a conversation...。这里使用了 instruct sb. to do sth.(指示某人做某事)的结构。

主干为 participants... felt better than those...。 第一个是 who followed this instruction,修饰 participants;第二个是 who had been told to stand or sit in silence,修饰代词 those,并且在从句中使用了过去完成时的被动语态(had been told)。

The researchers also argued that...。在 that 引导的宾语从句内部,首先是一个由 when 引导的时间状语从句 when we shy away from...。该宾语从句的真正主干是 it is often due to a misplaced anxiety。在 anxiety 之后,that they might not want to talk to us 是一个同位语从句,解释说明 anxiety 的具体内容。
