As is vividly illustrated in the chart, there was a dramatic increase in the number of mobile phone subscribers worldwide from 2000 to 2008. Specifically, the number of users in developing countries surged from less than 1 billion in 2000 to nearly 4 billion in 2008. In sharp contrast, developed countries only experienced a slight climb, reaching approximately 1 billion users by the end of 2008.
The intended meaning of this chart is profound: it highlights the rapid expansion of information technology in the developing world. Several factors contribute to this tremendous growth. First and foremost, the large population base in developing countries creates a huge market demand.
